Construction Site is a hands-on class for children ages 4-5 years old. Each week the children will be able to choose from a wide variety of building materials including wooden unit blocks, hollow blocks, Legos, cardboard blocks, foam blocks, magnetic blocks, and much more. Supplemental materials (cars, animals, scarves, rocks, wooden people, dinosaurs, etc) will be rotated through the centers on a regular basis. Non-traditional sensory building materials will also be available each week, such as play dough, kinetic sand, Wiki Sticks, and clay. This is very much a children-directed class. Children will be able to move through the centers as they wish and work at their own pace by themselves, in small groups, or in large groups. Each class will include a short group time with a time for discussion and book reading, depending on the children's interests and needs. Block building is known to enhance all areas of children's development, including fine and large motor skills, literacy awareness, math skills, social skills, and more. In particular we will be focusing on social skills. Children will be encouraged to work together, take turns and share, compromise, and communicate their ideas and feelings.
