We will investigate a variety of topics in the natural sciences through outdoor exploration, specimen studies, learning activities, experiments, and nature games. Students will practice the scientific method by asking questions, developing hypotheses, designing and implementing investigations, collecting and recording data, and sharing their conclusions. Each week's class will focus on a different natural science theme including: becoming a naturalist; ecosystems, habitats and food webs; living and non-living things; animal groups, life cycles, and adaptations; plant growth and native plants; discovering and studying invertebrates and their habitats; animal tracks, homes and signs; seasonal changes and weather; chemistry concepts like atoms, molecules, chemical reactions, and polymers (slimes); and much more! We will almost always go outdoors for a portion of every class, rain or shine, utilizing the forest and wetland behind the building in our investigations.
